Hardware Parameters of the HDD Itself
- Rotation speed: This is the core parameter affecting the read and write speed of an HDD. The higher the rotation speed of the HDD platter, the larger the area of the platter that the head can scan per unit time, and the faster the read and write speed.
Common consumer-grade HDD rotation speeds are 5400rpm and 7200rpm. The read and write speed of a 7200rpm HDD is generally 20%-30% higher than that of a 5400rpm one; the rotation speed of enterprise-grade HDDs can reach 10000rpm and 15000rpm, with faster speeds.
- Cache capacity: The cache of an HDD is a space for temporarily storing data to be read or written. The larger the cache, the more waiting data it can temporarily store, reducing the number of repeated seeks of the head, thereby improving the efficiency of reading and writing. For example, an HDD with 128MB cache will have more stable speed when continuously reading and writing small files than one with 64MB cache.
- Interface type: The interface determines the data transmission bandwidth between the HDD and the host. Common HDD interfaces include SATA 3.0 and SAS.
The maximum transmission bandwidth of SATA 3.0 is 6Gbps, and the maximum transmission bandwidth of SAS 3.0 is 12Gbps. The HDD with SAS interface will have a higher upper limit of data transmission speed.
- Platter density: The higher the single-platter capacity of the platter, the higher the track density on the platter. The head can read more data with the same moving distance, and the read and write speed will also increase accordingly.
Working Status of the HDD
- Amount of disk fragments: When a large number of files are stored in the HDD, and after multiple deletion and writing operations, a lot of disk fragments will be generated. The head needs to repeatedly seek in different fragment positions, which will greatly reduce the read and write speed.
- Health status of the HDD: If the HDD has problems such as bad sectors or head aging, the seek accuracy and read-write stability of the head will decrease, the read-write speed will slow down, and even read-write failures may occur.
- Load status: If the HDD is performing multiple read and write tasks at the same time, such as downloading files, copying files, and running programs in the HDD at the same time, the head needs to frequently switch the read and write positions, which will cause the read and write speed to decrease.
External Usage Environment and Supporting Equipment
- Interface bandwidth of the host: If the interface bandwidth of the host is lower than that of the HDD, such as connecting a SATA 3.0 HDD to a SATA 2.0 interface, the read and write speed of the HDD will be limited by the interface and cannot exert its full performance.
- Stability of power supply: If the voltage supplied to the HDD is unstable, it will affect the normal operation of the motor and head inside the HDD, resulting in fluctuations in read and write speed, and even damage to the HDD.
- Ambient temperature: If the ambient temperature exceeds the optimal operating temperature of the HDD, the operating resistance of the motor and head inside the HDD will increase, resulting in slower read and write speed.
